Tyla (Tyla Laura Seethal) is a South African singer and songwriter born on January 30, 2002, in Edenvale (near Johannesburg). She blends pop, amapiano, and R&B in her sound—often called “popiano.”
Her breakout came with the 2023 single “Water,” which went viral on TikTok and became a global hit, earning her the Grammy for Best African Music Performance. She followed up with her debut album Tyla in 2024.
Tyla is of multiethnic heritage (Zulu, Irish, Indian, Mauritian) and has been praised for bringing South African music and culture to the global stage with freshness and style.
